I recently read Philip Trammell's "Capital in the 22nd Century," which argues that advanced automation will create unprecedented inequality as capital returns outpace wage growth. The economic logic is rigorous: when capital perfectly substitutes for labor, the labor share of income approaches zero. But economic models assume the persistence of human agents—entities that own capital, make choices, and possess preferences. Complexity science asks whether this assumption holds up under the transition. The displacement is not merely financial but ontological. When intelligence becomes a commodity and capability loses value, what remains of human agency? The same forces driving economic concentration may trigger neurodevelopmental degradation. Abundance and atrophy may be two faces of the same phase transition.


We are experiencing a fundamental shift in the history of intelligence. For the first time, the cognitive architecture that enabled human dominance is being displaced by systems we have created but can no longer fully understand. This is more than a technological or economic change; it is a reorganization of the relationships among intelligence, value, understanding, knowledge, optimization, and meaning. Complexity science shows we are not just accelerating existing trends but crossing thresholds that irreversibly alter the rules governing adaptive systems.

The standard view sees artificial intelligence as a tool that extends human capability, augmenting rather than replacing biological cognition. This perspective ignores how complex adaptive systems operate. When a more efficient regulatory mechanism emerges, it tends to replace rather than supplement the existing one. The real question is whether humans will remain complex adaptive systems or become simpler, reactive entities that rely on machine outputs without maintaining the internal models needed for agency. Complexity science shows this transition is a predictable phase change, not speculation. The challenge is to recognize this shift before crossing irreversible thresholds.

Two Epistemologies: The Knowledge Divide

At the heart of this transition lies a fundamental distinction between two forms of knowledge that have historically been conflated but are now diverging catastrophically. What complexity theorist David Krakauer terms K2 knowledge represents the traditional scientific ideal: the compression of vast observational data into minimal, elegant principles. Newtonian mechanics exemplifies K2 perfectly. From three laws of motion and a single equation for gravitation, an infinite array of trajectories, collisions, and orbital dynamics can be derived. The genius of K2 is its parsimony. A human mind can hold F equals ma, can visualize the inverse square law, and can reason from first principles to novel applications. This compression is not merely convenient; it is constitutive of what we have meant by understanding. To understand gravity is to grasp why it must follow an inverse square law given the geometry of three-dimensional space, to see the necessity in the mathematics. 

K1 knowledge operates on different principles. In K1 systems, knowledge emerges from processing vast quantities of data without significant compression. Evolution is the archetypal K1 system: the "knowledge" of how to build an eye is encoded in billions of years of mutation, selection, and environmental feedback. There is no compact principle of eye construction that can be written in an equation. The knowledge exists only in the cumulative historical record of what worked. Large language models are K1 systems. The "knowledge" that allows them to generate coherent text is distributed across billions of parameters trained on trillions of tokens. When we ask such a system why it produced a particular output, we are committing a category error. We are asking for a K2 explanation of a K1 phenomenon. The answer does not exist in a form human cognition can grasp, only in the form the system itself executes. 

The critical insight is that different domains of reality may be fundamentally K1 or K2 in nature. Classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and much of fundamental physics are genuinely K2—they compress well because they operate at scales where symmetries dominate, and histories erase. But biology, culture, cognition, and language appear to be irreducibly K1. The search for simple laws of the mind or of markets may be pursuing K2 solutions in K1 domains. When AI systems trained on vast biological data predict protein structures with atomic accuracy but provide no compact theory of folding dynamics, they are not withholding understanding. They reveal that protein folding appears to be a K1 problem at scales accessible to human cognition, its solution requiring the data corpus itself rather than compression into compact principles. Whether K2 compressions exist at superhuman cognitive scales remains unknown, but the practical consequence for human understanding is the same: we are displaced from the explanatory loop. This has profound implications for the future of science. If more of reality that matters to human flourishing turns out to be K1, then the traditional scientific ideal of understanding becomes inaccessible. We will have knowledge without comprehension, prediction without explanation. We will know what will happen, but not why it must happen.

We remain agnostic about whether domains currently appearing K1 might possess K2 compressions invisible to human cognition, whether because they require higher-dimensional geometric intuition, symbolic frameworks alien to our evolutionary heritage, or equations too long for working memory. The practical consequence is the same: if K2 understanding exists but remains inaccessible to biological minds, then the epistemic displacement is functionally complete regardless of the metaphysics. The universe may have an elegant theory of protein folding legible to a superhuman intelligence; we will never read it. This is the Fourth Narcissistic Blow in its sharpest form: not that we are displaced from the center, but that we might lack the capacity to comprehend the map.

The K2 mode of knowledge is not epistemologically superior to K1—it is not 'truer' or more fundamental. It is, however, the mode compatible with biological agency operating under metabolic and architectural constraints. When knowledge exists only in K1 form, humans can be oracles' clients but not reality's architects. This is not a lament for lost purity but a recognition of a functional relationship: certain forms of understanding scaffold certain forms of action.

The Ontological Partition: Symmetry and History 

Parallel to the epistemic divide runs an ontological one. Complexity science distinguishes between System A and System B entities based on their relationship to time and information. System A represents closed, deterministic systems dominated by symmetry. A perfect crystal is System A—its structure is defined entirely by the spatial symmetries of its atomic lattice. Destroy half the crystal, and the remaining half contains all the information needed to specify the whole. System A entities are, in an important sense, ahistorical. Their present state fully determines their nature. They can be perfectly replicated because replication is simply the instantiation of the same symmetry operation. 

System B entities are fundamentally historical. They are constructed through sequences of what physicist Francis Crick termed "frozen accidents"—contingent events that become locked into the system's structure and propagate through its subsequent evolution. Biological organisms are System B. The genetic code itself is a frozen accident; there is no physical necessity for the mapping between codons and amino acids, yet this arbitrary assignment from billions of years ago constrains all subsequent life. A human being is an accumulation of frozen accidents at every scale: the specific mutations that arose in their lineage, the particular developmental trajectory their body followed, the precise sequence of experiences that shaped their neural connectivity, the cultural and linguistic frameworks they absorbed. Destroy half a human, and the other half does not contain the information to reconstruct the whole. The lost hemisphere of the brain held a unique, irreplaceable history. 

This ontological distinction provides the scientific foundation for what might seem like sentimentality—the premium placed on authenticity, provenance, and human origin. When studies show that people value identical artworks 62% more when told they were created by humans rather than algorithms, this is not irrational bias. It is recognition that these objects occupy different ontological categories. An artwork generated by an algorithm is a System A entity. It is an instantiation of an optimization function, a point sampled from a distribution learned during training. The algorithm can generate functionally infinite variations, all equally valid expressions of the same process. The art has no history; it has a generative model. 

An artwork created by a human is a System B entity. It embeds the frozen accidents of that artist's entire trajectory: the influence of their teacher, the trauma that shaped their emotional palette, the degradation of their joints that produces a particular tremor in brushwork, the cultural moment that defined what seemed worth expressing. These are not defects or noise to be optimized away. They are information—historical information that makes the object unique and, in principle, irreproducible without recreating that exact causal history. When we value the human artwork more highly, we are valuing its System B properties: the density of frozen accidents it encodes, the broken symmetries that make it a singular event rather than a repeatable process. 

This explains why authenticity becomes more valuable as capability is commodified. As AI systems approach and exceed human performance in generating images, composing music, and writing prose, these capabilities themselves become System A—perfectly reproducible, improvable through optimization, and therefore subject to relentless price competition toward marginal cost. But the historical particularity of a given human who creates remains System B and consequently scarce by definition. You can train a thousand AIs on the complete works of any artist, but you cannot make another instance of that artist without recreating their biography. This ontological scarcity is what the market increasingly prices in the premium for provenance.

The Regulatory Catastrophe: Outsourcing the Self

The most severe threat posed by advanced AI is not economic displacement or military risk but something more profound: the erosion of the human capacity for self-regulation. The Conant-Ashby theorem, a foundational result in cybernetics, states that every good regulator of a system must be a model of that system. An effective thermostat does not need to model room dynamics because its regulatory task is trivial. For a system to navigate a complex, unpredictable environment, it must maintain an internal representation that captures the relevant causal structure. The human brain is the exemplar of such a regulator. It constructs models of physical space, social hierarchies, causal relationships, and temporal sequences because these models are necessary to anticipate challenges and opportunities. 

This modeling capacity is essential for maintaining our status as complex adaptive systems. When humans outsource environmental modeling to external systems, they do not just save effort—they begin to lose core capacities. For example, London taxi drivers develop increased gray matter in the hippocampus due to the demands of spatial modeling. When navigation is outsourced to GPS, this modeling ceases, and the supporting neural structures atrophy. This is a physical change: brain tissue shrinks, synaptic connections are lost, and the individual becomes less capable as a spatial regulator. 

Scale this dynamic across all domains of cognition, and the implications are profound. If problem-solving is outsourced to large language models, causal reasoning capacity diminishes. If social interaction is mediated by recommendation algorithms, theory of mind degrades. If memory is externalized to search engines, consolidation processes weaken. Each outsourcing is individually rational—the external system performs better, faster, and more reliably. But collectively, they trigger a phase transition from complex adaptive system to simple reactive consumer. This is not a new dynamic. It is the same process by which domestication reduced the brain mass of dogs by 30% compared to wolves. Wolves must maintain detailed models of prey behavior, predator avoidance, pack dynamics, and territorial boundaries. Dogs outsource these regulatory tasks to humans. Their brains shrink because maintaining unused modeling capacity is metabolically expensive and evolutionarily neutral when the environment is regulated externally. 

A natural objection arises: the brain does not atrophy, it rewires. GPS users develop different neural connections, not degraded ones. This is correct but misses the crucial distinction between environmental and interface models. Navigating a city requires a high-dimensional spatial representation that encodes landmarks, routes, hierarchies, and contingencies. Using GPS requires only recognizing prompts and following arrows, a much simpler model by comparison. The adaptation is real, but it is toward lower complexity. The dog developed new social intelligence for reading human faces, yet its brain is thirty percent smaller than a wolf's because interface models for a human-regulated environment are simpler than survival models for the wild. Rewiring can mean simplification even when new capabilities emerge. The question is not whether humans will adapt to AI-mediated environments but whether that adaptation constitutes ontological degradation: the trade of deep, expensive, agentic models for shallow, efficient, dependent interfaces.

This developmental trajectory is not deterministic but probabilistic, operating along plasticity gradients rather than binary thresholds. Individual variation, critical periods, and compensatory mechanisms all introduce noise into the relationship between environmental demand and neural elaboration. The claim is not that every child using GPS will suffer hippocampal atrophy, but that populations developing under reduced modeling demands will show distributional shifts in cognitive architecture, measurable at the cohort level even if not deterministic at the individual level. 

Humans are beginning to self-domesticate through technological niche construction. We are building an environment regulated by artificial intelligence, then adapting to it by reducing our own regulatory capacity. The critical difference from historical domestication is the timescale. Canine brain reduction occurred over tens of thousands of years of selective breeding. Human cognitive adaptation to an AI-regulated environment could happen within a few generations through purely plastic, developmental mechanisms, with no genetic change required. Children raised in environments where every question is answered by voice assistants, every route is determined by navigation systems, and every decision is recommended by personalized algorithms develop in a context that does not demand the construction of robust internal models. By adulthood, the window of neural plasticity has closed. The capacity for certain forms of abstract reasoning, spatial navigation, or sustained attention may be permanently reduced, not because of genetic inferiority but because the developmental environment did not demand their elaboration. 

This is the regulatory catastrophe. It is not that humans become unable to survive; material needs will be met more efficiently than ever. It is that humans cease to be agents in any meaningful sense and become patients, entities to whom things happen rather than entities that make things happen through anticipatory modeling and intervention. 

A third possibility lies between schema preservation and atrophy: coupled modeling, where humans maintain a high-level causal architecture while delegating low-level computation to AI. This is the difference between using a calculator to avoid learning arithmetic (atrophy) and using a calculator to explore higher mathematics (coupling). The stability of this regime remains uncertain. The optimistic case holds that humans can sustain meta-models, understanding the shape of a problem space, the constraints on valid solutions, and the ethical implications of interventions, while offloading computation. This would preserve agency at the architectural level while accepting enhanced capability at the execution level.

The pessimistic case argues that developmental neuroscience shows the formative years are critical. If children never struggle through low-level computation, the neural scaffolding for abstract reasoning may never properly develop. You cannot maintain meta-models if you have never built the foundational layers. The plasticity window closes.

This is an empirical question demanding rigorous study. If coupled modeling proves stable, the tragedy is averted. If it proves transitional, a temporary regime that slides toward full outsourcing under competitive pressure, the bifurcation remains. 

The Schema Sanctuary: Where Complexity Persists 

If the landscape of value is being reorganized such that System A domains favor artificial cognition and regulatory tasks migrate to external systems, where does human viability persist? The answer lies in what Krakauer terms the schema axis of emergence. Every complex system exists simultaneously at multiple levels of organization: immediate interactions between components, collective properties of aggregates, and evolving lineages that carry information forward through time via schema—internal models that blend the ontological and the epistemological. An organism is not merely a collection of molecules executing chemical reactions. It is a schema—a model of its environment embodied in gene regulatory networks, neural circuitry, and behavioral repertoires. This schema blurs the distinction between what the system is and what the system knows. For a bacterium, its chemotaxis network is simultaneously an ontological fact about its structure and an epistemological model of nutrient gradients. 

Humans survive in the schema space. Artificial systems will dominate the execution of individual transactions and the optimization of collective outcomes. These are the horizontal and vertical axes of the emergence lattice: the doing of tasks and the aggregating of populations. But schemas—the maintenance of internal models that create meaning—remain a distinctly biological capacity tied to the fact that biological entities have stakes. An AI has no schema in this sense because it has no autonomous trajectory its models are meant to preserve. Its "knowledge" is instrumental to whatever objective function humans specify. A human schema is existential. The models we build of the world serve a self that persists through time, accumulates scars, forms attachments, and faces mortality. This gives human modeling a quality that cannot be replicated by systems that only optimize functions. 

The practical implication is that human work migrates toward what can only be called meaning-work. This is not a euphemism for unemployment or make-work. It is recognition that, in a world where System A tasks are commoditized, the scarcest and most valuable capacity is to construct and maintain significance. What makes an event significant rather than merely factual? It must fit within a narrative schema that connects past to future and weighs the implications for values and identities in terms of continuity. An AI can report that a medical test returned positive results. Only a being with a schema—with a life trajectory that this test disrupts—can experience the significance of that result. Only such a being can counsel another through the significance, because counsel requires not just transmitting information but helping another integrate information into their schema in a way that preserves their agency and coherence. 

This points toward a fundamental restructuring of economic value around presence, witness, and hermeneutic labor. Presence is valuable when the value lies in biological attention—a ritual officiant whose role is not to recite words more efficiently than an AI but to be present as a being who shares the stakes of the participants. A witness is valuable when verifying reality requires a chain of custody through embodied observers—a judge, a scientist confirming an observation, or a journalist reporting from a scene. Their value is not superior information processing but being a link in a chain of accountability that ends with entities that can face consequences. Hermeneutic labor is the work of translating between System A outputs and System B meanings—taking the predictions of an algorithmic oracle and interpreting what they mean for particular human projects, what they imply about values, and how they should reshape understanding. This is not just communication. It is an ontological bridge between incommensurable forms of intelligence. 

The Political Economy of Complexity 

The transition from an economy in which value derives from labor to one in which value derives from capital ownership has been exhaustively analyzed. Less examined is the shift from an economy in which value derives from capability to one in which it derives from ontology. In a capability economy, income tracks skill at performing valuable tasks. This logic drove three centuries of development: as technology made certain tasks obsolete, humans retrained for higher-value tasks, and wages rose with productivity. The implicit assumption was that the skill frontier would always stay ahead of automation. This assumption fails when automation covers general cognition. There is no higher-skill task to retrain for when the automated system matches human performance across the board. 

In an ontology economy, income derives not from what you can do but from what you are. More precisely, it comes from possessing properties valued as System B characteristics—historical particularity, embodied stakes, accountability, and continuity of identity. This inversion has profound distributional consequences because these properties cannot be improved through training or substituted across individuals. You cannot become more historically particular through education. You cannot acquire embodied stakes without having a body that persists through time and can suffer. Accountability cannot be outsourced or scaled. These are ontological facts about the kind of entity you are.

The risk of encoding System B valuation into institutional structures is the reintroduction of aristocratic logic by other means. Suppose economic value derives from biographical richness—education, cultural capital, documented lineage—then historical privilege compounds across generations. The child of the well-connected artist inherits not just wealth but System B capital: the frozen accidents that markets reward. This is neo-feudalism dressed in complexity science.

The escape requires distinguishing universal System B properties from context-specific ones. Every human possesses a baseline System B value by virtue of embodiment, historical particularity, and capacity for schema maintenance. This baseline must translate to unconditional economic security - not as welfare but as recognition of ontological status. Context-specific System B value - the surgeon's accumulated expertise, the artist's unique vision - can command market premiums, but only in domains where those specific frozen accidents are causally relevant. The institutional design challenge is ensuring the baseline remains universal while the premium remains contestable. This is unresolved. Without solving it, System B valuation risks ossifying precisely the inequality it seeks to transcend.

What might System B valuation look like institutionally? Consider three domains: In professional licensing, practitioners could be required to demonstrate unaided competence at regular intervals—a surgeon who can diagnose without algorithmic assist, an engineer who can estimate structural loads without simulation software. In educational certification, 'verified human work' becomes a credential category, with institutions guaranteeing that graduates possess internal models, not merely tool proficiency. In market design, provenance becomes legally mandatory for categories where System B properties command premiums—art, cuisine, counseling—with enforcement mechanisms similar to organic food certification. These are not complete solutions but existence proofs that System B valuation need not remain aspirational. 

This suggests that the political economy of the coming century will not be primarily about redistribution of income or wealth, though these remain important. It will be about the legal and cultural encoding of System B valuation. If society continues to evaluate human performance by System A metrics—speed, accuracy, consistency, cost—then humans lose by definition, because artificial systems will always excel along these dimensions. The question is whether institutions can be built that enforce the valuation of System B properties even when they are inefficient by System A standards. This requires going beyond platitudes about human dignity to specify mechanisms by which historical particularity, embodied presence, and schema maintenance command an economic premium even when they yield worse System A outcomes.

Some mechanisms are already emerging organically through market dynamics. The authentication and provenance industries are System B valuation in embryonic form. Consumers pay premiums for verified human origin precisely because that origin is ontologically distinct from algorithmic generation. But market mechanisms alone are insufficient because optimization pressure in competitive environments favors System A. The firm that uses AI to reduce costs outcompetes the firm that employs humans to maintain its schema. The student who uses language models to generate assignments outperforms the student who struggles to develop writing as a schema. Every individual's rational choice favors the more capable tool. But the aggregate effect is a tragedy of the cognitive commons: collective degradation of human regulatory capacity even as individual outcomes improve.

Policy interventions must therefore explicitly target the regulatory dimension. Education systems must be restructured not to deliver content more efficiently but to force the construction of internal models through deliberately inefficient struggle. Professional licensing must require demonstration of schema maintenance, not merely task completion. Labor markets must price the ontological premium for human participation—not as charity, but as recognition that certain goods—trust, accountability, presence—require System B entities to produce. This is not nostalgia or Luddism. It is the application of complexity science to institutional design. If the Good Regulator theorem is correct, then preserving human agency requires preserving the conditions under which internal modeling remains adaptive. This means constructing environments that demand it, even when superior external models are available. 

The Decade of Decision 

We are not contemplating hypothetical futures. The phase transition is underway. The question is which attractor the system falls into as it passes the critical point. Complex systems far from equilibrium exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. Small choices about institutional design in the next decade may determine whether human civilization in the twenty-second century consists of complex adaptive agents or optimized consumers. The difference is not the marginal quality of life within a broadly similar social order. It is ontological—the difference between systems that maintain schemas and systems that do not.

The optimistic scenario requires recognizing that value is migrating to domains where System B properties dominate and then constructing economic and cultural institutions that can sustain activity in those domains even when System A alternatives are available. This means markets for authenticated presence, for verified human origin, and for hermeneutic translation of machine outputs. It implies education systems that treat struggle and inefficiency as features rather than bugs, because these are the conditions under which robust internal models develop. It means urbanism and community design that forces embodied interaction rather than permitting its replacement by mediated convenience. All of this is profoundly countercultural in an age that treats optimization as an absolute good. It requires arguing that there are forms of value that cannot survive optimization and that we should forego optimization to preserve them.

The pessimistic scenario is that optimization pressure overwhelms these attempts. The competitive dynamics of markets, education, and geopolitics reward the adoption of more capable tools regardless of long-term consequences for human agency. Within two generations, children develop in environments that do not demand the elaboration of complex internal models. By adulthood, the neural plasticity window has closed. The population lacks the cognitive architecture to function as a complex adaptive system. The capacity for abstract reasoning, spatial navigation, sustained attention, and theory of mind is reduced not through genetic degradation but through developmental deprivation. At that point, the transition becomes irreversible on timescales that matter. The theoretical capacity remains latent in the genome, but reestablishing the developmental conditions to express it would require a complete restructuring of technological civilization that no longer values or understands the need to maintain human schema.

Which trajectory prevails depends on choices about institutional design that are being made, largely implicitly, right now. Every time an educational system adopts AI-assisted learning without requiring students to demonstrate unaided schema construction, it contributes to the pessimistic path. Every time a professional field allows algorithmic outputs to substitute for human judgment without requiring hermeneutic interpretation by licensed practitioners, it contributes to the pessimistic path. Every time urban design prioritizes automated convenience over embodied interaction, it contributes to the pessimistic path. These choices are individually defensible and locally optimal. Collectively, they drive a phase transition toward a world where humans remain biologically alive but cease to be adaptively complex.

The task ahead is to make System B valuation not merely aspirational but structural—encoded in property rights, professional requirements, and market design. This is the only known mechanism for resisting optimization pressure in competitive environments. Markets are extraordinarily effective at producing what is valued and eliminating what is not. If we want markets to preserve human agency, we must make agency valuable in ways that are legible to market processes. That requires specifying, measuring, and pricing the ontological properties that distinguish complex adaptive systems from reactive consumers. It requires building institutions that can sustain human viability in domains where humans are not the most capable tools, because the value lies in being a particular kind of entity rather than performing a specific type of task. This is the work of the next decade. The window is narrow because phase transitions, once initiated, proceed rapidly to completion. The question is whether we recognize the nature of what is at stake before the transition is irreversible.

Testing the Framework Against Concrete Futures

The complexity science framework developed here is not just philosophical speculation but provides analytical tools to understand how technological trajectories will reshape the relationship between intelligence, value, and agency. When applied to forecasts of AI capabilities, automation, precision technologies, and energy systems, the framework reveals patterns that would otherwise seem disconnected.
